Classic Locations in the BR era! Firstly, Sheffield Midland station in the three years 1986, 1987 & 1988. Passenger trains are in the hands of Peaks, 47s and 31s but 20s and even a 25 are seen on class one duties. For chapter 2 we drop a few hundred miles South to Basingstoke in 1986, with 50s on the Exeter Trains and 33s and 73s as a supporting cast. Chapter 3 see us North of the border at Perth to see 20s, 26s, 27s, 37s & 47s in action. Ex works 26025 is seen illustrating the new railfrieght grey livery. Dunblane, Stirling & Larbert scenes also feature.

Chapter 1: Norwich station on a summer Saturday in August 1988, and the station is a hive of activity as we look at the cross-country holiday trains, London services and local trains arriving and in many cases changing engines. Trains are in the hands of Class 31s, 47s and 86s though a class 37 makes an appearance. Derby and Metro-Cammell units are also seen and even a Clacton unit makes an appearance. Chapter 2:Newport in 1985 & 1990 reverberates to the sound of 33s, 37s and 47s with 31s and 56s making an appearance. Liveries of course are from that period. Chapter 3: Milford Junction on West Yorkshire is the scene for HEAVY freight in 1992. Naturally, 56s are the staple motive power but 31s, 37s, 47s, 58s, and brand new 60s also appear.

Chapter 1: Stockport station between 1986 and 1991. Hauled passenger trains in the hands of class 31s. 47s. a class 45, plus the AC electric fleet, while the freight turns produce 25s, 37s & 47s. On the unit front, there is an appearance by a Royal Mail liveried Derby DMU set and the good old Class 304 EMUs are still in service. Chapter 2 comprises a visit to Eastfield diesel depot and Springburn Works in 1991, featuring Class 08, 20, 26, 27, 37, 47 & 90 locomotives. Finally, Reading platform views in the years 1987 & 1988, when Network South East ruled the roost on commuter services. Cross country services are primarily in the hands of 47s with class 50s on the Oxfords, and the freights produce 33s, 37s, 56s, 59s, and even 47901

We visit four classic locations; Inverness in 1987 & 1988 where class 37s & 47s dominate, but class 20s and 26s are still occasional visitors to the Highland Capital. Manchester Victoria, with fabulous scenes filmed in 1983 & 1984, sees classes 25, 31, 40, 45, 46, 47 & 56.
Next we visit Leamington Spa in 1989. 47s are the staple motive power on the passenger turns but 50s, 56s, and even class 20s are seen on this particular day.
Chapter 4: Sees us at Barnetby in 1990 & 1991 when motive power wasn’t so predictable; hence we see 20s, 31s, 47s, 56s, and 60s which are just on the scene.

Clapham Junction in the period 1991 to 1992 is our first port of call. Most passenger stock still carries NSE livery, and class 50s have not yet been ousted from the Exeter trains. Amongst numerous freights, we see class 73s on the Gatwick Airport trains.
The Inter-City Diesel event on the Midland Main Line on 20th May 1989 is the feature in chapter two. Special trains hauled by 20s, 33s , 37s, 47s a 56 and a 58 are interspersed amongst the regular traffic on that day. Chapter three takes us to Bristol Temple Meads in 1987 where ‘Cromptons’ still rule on the Portsmouth trains, supported occasionally by other motive power. See Bath Road as it used to be!

East Anglia has been a favourite haunt for many enthusiasts over the years, and so we start Volume 6 with scenes from March and Ely in both 1987 & 1989. With many passenger trains still loco-hauled there is lots to keep the viewer’s interest. Moving North of the boarder in chapter 2, we see views of the Edinburgh to Dundee route in 1980 and 1986, with class 27s to the fore, ably supported by 26s, 47s and even class 40s. Chapter 3 brings us back South, this time to Oxford and Didcot in the 1988-1989 period, with class 47s & 50s on the Paddington services and a variety of other types on freight duties.

We start Volume 7 at York in the period 1986 to 1990 to witness the first days of the ‘Peak’ diesels, still handling mainline passenger work right to the end, and then see the transition period leading to sectorisation. Chapter 2 takes us to Stafford in the summer of 1989, and its not just electric locomotives in evidence, as 20s, 31s, 37s & 47s also appear beside the class 81, 85, 86, 87 & 90s on passenger and freight duties.

Finally, we look at Derby & Nottingham station scenes in 1991-1992, together with an interlude at Trent Junction, and then scenes filmed inside and around Toton traction depot.

Volume 8 starts on the South Coast at Southhampton in 1988. History went on to show that this was the end of an era, with class 33s still in full flow on freight and passenger work, ably supported by class 47s, and with additional class 73 diagrams on the Waterloo trains. Chapter 2 features a short interlude at Tinsley depot in 1992, including a look round the depot, the holding sidings and the stored locomotives in the yard.

Finally we visit Warrington during the period 1986 – 1991 to see Classes 20, 25, 31, 45, 47 and 56 all hard at work together with the ageing AC electric types.

This is the first in our major series of programmes looking at the changing face of our railways in the Western peninsula. Volume 1 concentrates on the area around Bristol and the route to Bath, Westbury and Weymouth and uses rare film to illustrate these changes, particularly on the motive power front. Castles, Grangers, Kings, Countries & Halls, Britannias, West Country, classes 3MT, 4F, 7F and 9F are seen, plus a variety of diesel types dating back to the 1960s.
