Video & stills now added for our new release - GVF138 Stars of Steam Vol II

1st January 2008

Please feel free to use the SEARCH routine on our frontpage which is FULLY OPERATIONAL.
By inserting a loco number OR location OR year, it should be possible to list the programmes that feature these details.
Bear in mind that locos may have carried more than one number eg a search for Brush Type 4 no D1610 would not locate 47031,47560 or 47832 which were other numbers carried.

VIDEO SAMPLES - JUST A REMINDER

Video clips are now available for many products in our online catalogue.

For speed and convenience, these samples are compressed files and are reduced to 50% definition. As such THEY ARE MUCH POORER QUALITY THAN THE FINISHED PRODUCT.

The intention is simply to give a flavour of the content of each programme.
Captions have also been removed from these clips.

To view the sample, just select the programme in either the VHS or the DVD catalogue. If a 'DOWNLOAD CLIP' prompt appears at the bottom of the page then a clip is available.

Please note : You will require an up-to-date version of 'Windows Media Player' software installed on your PC to run these clips and it must be capable of reading 'avi' files.

** WARNING ** : Video files are large and will take a considerable time to download if you are using a dial up connection - possibly up to 10 mins using a connection operating at 56.6kbps, probably 60 seconds or less on broadband.
Please be aware of this before you attempt the download.

Windows Media Player will show the display 'connecting' - just let it get on with it and put the kettle on!

You should find, however that subsequent viewing of previously downloaded clips is pretty well instantaneous, even on dial-up, and may run more smoothly.

If you would like to test the download procedure a 3 second clip of 70KB is attached below.
This will ensure that your system is capable of reading and displaying .avi files properly.

Please note also that Windows Media Player does not *necessarily* come with every codec software library you might want to use (although recent versions seem to).

Microsoft publish advice at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0031.aspx

The essence of the advice seems to be to click the `Download codecs
automatically' box in the `Player' tab, although this may not suit all
users.

You can also download free of charge this codec which is only 600k in size at

New motive power to Kingswear

Following hard on the heels of our news item of 2nd September, Kingswear hosted another FIRST the following weekend.

On Saturday 8 September, class 40 No 40145 in large logo livery, made a debut for the class, when it powered Pathfinders 1Z55 Banbury to Kingswear, standing in for the unavailable 55022 ROYAL SCOTS GREY.
First of all we see the 40 passing Dawlish Warren with the down train (photographed by Richard Hargreaves) , then the classic view from Sugar Loaf Hill at Waterside, near Goodrington, and shows the returning special bathed in brilliant sunshine.
Click below for a short video clip of the train leaving Paignton, (give it a few seconds to load as usual).

On the following day, 9 September, the former Southern region Battle of Britain class, 34067 TANGMERE, headed the Torbay Express, following the unavailabilty of 6024 King Edward I.

After a smooth run from Bristol, Tangmere found the infamous Goodrington bank just too much to take. This was the same spot that defeated 60009 Union of South Africa in 2005.

Help arrived in the form of Ex-GWR 2-8-0 No 5239, which was borrowed from the 1300 Kingswear-Paignton service, and assisted the Bullied to the summit at Churston.

First EWS class 37/4s to Kingswear

Just like buses - you wait ages for one to come along, then 2 come together!

Not only that, but the first visit by EWS liveried class 37/4s to Kingswear on the 'Dartmouth Arrow' of Friday 31 August 2007, was repeated when 37410+37417 visited the branch again two days later with the Torbay Express from Bristol, filling in for the unavailable steam locomotive 6024 King Edward I.

The 11 coach train of 2 Septemer is seen above passing Waterside, between Goodrington and Churston, on the 7 mile branch from Paignton to Kingswear.

Birds Eye View

With only a handful of EWS class 37s still in traffic it's nice to see that they are still getting to old haunts.

This splendid view taken by Jon Price on Saturday 25 August 2007 shows 37422 and 37417 crossing Knucklas viaduct, on the Central Wales line, with 1Z38 1645 Llandrindod Wells-Eastleigh railtour.

Southern & Western Steam in Tandem

On 24 August 2007 Past Times railtours ran the 'Holliday Express' railtour from Bristol Temple Meads to Par and return with double-headed steam both ways.

The intriguing pairing was ex-GWR King No 6024 King Edward I and ex-Southern Railway Batlle of Britain 34067 Tangmere.

With the duo swapping positions for the return leg, both Western & Southern camps were happy.

The above view shows the outward train approaching Ivybridge.

Several shots of the special will appear in our forthcoming programme GVF138 Stars of Steam Vol II.

Biggest of the Big !

The 1st September 1984 was like any other Summer Saturday at Exeter St Davids until 1700 hours!
Then this happened to roll in with the 1215 Liverpool to Penzance HST service starting at Birmingham New Street.

The sequence that let to this amazing working commenced earlier that day, when the HST set failed on it's outward working and was terminated at Birmingham New Street.

Control decreed that Saltley would provide a locomotive to assist the HST back to the West Country and apparently the driver misheard his instructions and comandeered 58002 from the depot instead of Class 56 No 56058 which was intended.

Only when it was sitting on the train in New Street was the mistake noticed, and with the crew being members of the famous 'Saltley Seagulls', who were renowned for their outrageous escapades, their agreement to take the train was forward was not doubted!

Initally, as the story goes, Bristol was the destination for the Class 58, where the train would be terminated.
However Bristol came and went, and it was only the unfotunate air brake fault on the 58 at South Brent, between Totnes and Plymouth, that prevented the train continuing all the way to Penzance!

After the enforced stop at South Brent and nearly an hour attempting to continue with the Class 58, it was decided to restart the leading Power Car 43147, which managed to push the whole ensemble to Plymouth station, where the train was finally terminated.

58002 rounds the curve at Dawlish Warren

58002 turns a few heads at Plymouth

No doubting the location!
Thanks to Steve Woodbridge who was the only one of us with a camera!

Has there ever been a rarer diesel working on a service train to Plymouth?
The only candidate to come close we can come up with was D335 in (1964?).
Has anyone got a photo?

On 1 August 2007, 34067 Tangmere worked from London to Weymouth and back on Steam Dreams 'Sunny South Express'.

The Butlins Express

31452 (previously 31279/D5809), with 31454 at the rear, (prev. 31228/D5654) at Minehead in charge of the innagural 1Z35 1110 Minehead-Bristol Temple Meads.

Thanks to the joint efforts of the West Somerset Railway, Butlins, Victa Westlink and Mainline, 20 July 2007 saw the first scheduled passenger train to run from Minehead to Bristol since 1971. No less than 36 years!

We all skived off for the day to join in this historic event and travelled to Bristol with the train.

With much of the rail network in the South of England paralised due to flooding, it is to the credit of everyone involved that the train made it out and back without any major hitches.

The service is not subsidised and it's continued operation will depend on patronage, so please make an effort to have a ride on the train as well as photographing it. See the WSR website for timings and operating dates.

The return fare from Minehead to Bristol is £21.95

There is plenty to see en-route as shown below.

An array of class 66s can be seen in Fairwater yard, West of Taunton.
Amonst those present on 20 July 2007 were, 66610,66623 & 66625.

Amazingly, a class Mainline liveried 73 No 73133 is being used at present to shunt the yard at Fairwater.
It is normally stabled at the Western end of the yard.

Locomotives for todays jaunt were 31452 at the Bristol end and 31454 in Inter-City livery at the Minehead end.
31128 is spare at Bishops Lydeard should it be required.

Silver Surfer

During June & July 2007, the 'Steamy Affairs' charter train company are operating a short series of Blue Pullman specials under the banner 'Steam trains in the heart of Devon'.

On the first such outing of 23rd June, two silver liveried Cotswold class 47s, 47810 & 47828, were employed on the special originating from Ashford.

47810 'Captain Sensible' is seen leading the train past Goodrington with the return service.

43 years earlier, in 1964, the only Paxman engined Warship, D830 'Majestic', passes the exact same spot, but heading in the opposite direction, with a down local working to Kingswear.

Storming down from Drumochter summit on Thursday 19 August 1975 are 24113 & 26018 with the 1215 Inverness-Glasgow Queen Street.

Loco-hauled trains hanging on....

As a result of DMU shortages in the West Country around the 1989-1990 period, a scratch rake of two NSE Mk1 coaches was retianed at Exeter for emergency use.
The most regular service to 'drop' was on the Exeter to Barnstaple route and in the view above, which is a video frame, taken from GVF130 'Flight of the 50s', 50042 is seen running round it's train to form the 1746 Barnstaple-Exeter St Davids on 20 July 1990.

Cornish Capers!

Thanks to PAST TIMES railtours, late March 2007 has brought about a spate of interesting branch line workings to deepest Cornwall.

Branch lines that have not seen a 'real train' for several years were basking in the glory, indeed the local community band turned out at St Ives for the visit of Black 5 No 45407 on Sunday 25th.

Bodmin Bound!

With the exciting news that 47306 has been purchased for preservation by the Bodmin & Wenford Railway, we thought it would be interesting to see the condition of the loco which has been stored at St Blazey for some years.

Here it is pictured on 6 March 2005, complete with nameplates.

The deal is balanced by the sale to HNRC, Barrow Hill, of the lines two class 20s, 20166 and 20197.

Rare is a bit of an understatement when a 37 turns up in the West Country in 2007.

'A Champion Day Out'

With the first main line run of D1015 WESTERN CHAMPION in maroon livery on 21st October being mostly in darkness, it was a week later before we got to see the new paint finish in all it's glory - and it looks FANTASTIC!

In the view below D1015 passes the famous location of Dawlish with Past Time Railtours 'Cornubian' of 28th October 2006, 1Z24 Gloucester to Penzance.

As a matter of interest, the last Western to run in maroon livery was D1046 WESTERN MARQUIS which entered Swindon Works for an overhaul & repaint at the end of January 1971.
Was that REALLY 35 years ago!

2006 Dartmoor Railway Diesel Gala

2-car Hampshire unit 205.032 performs the shuttle duties to Meldon from Okehampton on Sunday 15 October 2006.

Saturday and Sunday 14th & 15th October 2006 saw the Okehampton based Dartmoor Railway operate it's first ever diesel gala running trains from Medon Quarry right through to Coleford Jn where the Barnstaple route meets up with the former LSWR route from Plymouth to Exeter, a distance of around 16 miles.

Motive power was drawn from a mixture of stored and preserved diesels with star billing going to the Bodmin & Wenford Railways 37142 and 50042 and the two 37s owned by the BREL (Class 37 Loco Group) owned, 37198 & 37905.

Many of the trains were seen to be very busy and the whole event appears to have been a great success.
The railway hope to be able to run into Yeoford station, on the Coleford to Exeter stretch, by 2007 or 2008, which would increase accessibility for rail travellers using the Exeter-Barnstaple services.

Below are 3 video clips of special on the line, all filmed on 15th October.
As always, please be patient as clips may take 20 or 30 seconds to load.
