THIS DAY IN HISTORY - 22 August

In this section we travel back in time to see what photos are in the archives that correspond with this date.

Our next dip into the past looks at the Summer Saturday extras on Saturday 22 August 1981.

These interesting services which were limited to just Saturdays in the Summer often resulted in rare freight locos turning up on passenger turns, much to the delight of the haulage fans.

Through Llandudno coaches operated as an 0842 portion from Sheffield Midland to Huddersfield in 1981, attaching there to 1M71 0855 from York, usually 40 hauled.

In this view Thornaby's 31275 awaits departure from Barnsley with the 1L15 service as far as Huddersfield.

31275 was withdrawn from Springs Branch, Wigan in May 1998 and scrapped at Carnforth in 2005.

Next, views of the Newcastle-Yarmouth and Yarmouth-Newcastle trains of 22 August 1981.

Firstly 40020 stands at Lincoln with the 0835 Newcastle-Yarmouth though train.
This service often loaded to 13 bogies, even when Class 31 hauled.
'Franconia' lasted just 12 more months being withdrawn in August 1982 and broken up at Crewe Works 5 years later.

The down train that day was headed by no heat loco 37020 of Thornaby, later to become 37702.
Happily 37702 still exists to this day and is one of the fleet operating on infrastructure duties in Spain
