Liverpool to Hull services were still loco-hauled in 1986. Here 31403 departs with the 1545 from Liverpool on 7th July 1986.
The 'Sprinter' revolution was well under way by 1987. However a shortage of units meant that, even in 1988, many services were still loco-hauled using 'scratch' rakes of stock. One such train is seen here as no-heat class 47/3 No 47348 departs from Sheffield Midland with the 0925 Liverpool-Nottingham service on 17th September 1988.
Chapter 2 takes us to Basingstoke on a sunny Wednesday in August, the 20th August.
33112 stands in the station with the 1010 Waterloo-Salisbury as the late runnig 0944 Waterloo-Bournemouth arrives behind Class 73 No 73006

Perth is our main focal point, however scenes at Stirling, Dunblane and Larbert also feature.
At a time when class 37s were still very rare on such services, 37184 departs from Perth with the 1030 Inverness-Glasgow on 18th July 1986.
