The programme takes us on a journey through the West
Country starting at Bristol and ending at Penzance.
It encompasses the Bristol-Weymouth route and the
Salisbury to Exeter route as well as all of the current
branch lines.
Below are just a small
selection of scenes taken from the video:
7 June 1997 and Bristol Temple Meads from high above as 47525 departs with the 0930 Glasgow-Paignton
Weymouth services were in the hands of class 37s for many years. In this view ex-St Blazey stalwart 37411, still in grey, departs from Yeovil Pen Mill with the 0840 Weymouth-Bristol on 6 November 1995.
The high summer of 1993 saw the unusual use of the Weymouth Quay tramway section to Weymouth Quay station.
Grey liveried 37425 CONCRETE BOB makes a strange sight as it mingles with traffic and pedestrians with the ecs for the 1245 Weymouth Quay-Yeovil Pen Mill on 18 August 1993.
Before the advent of Class 159 sprinters on the route we see a 'real' train headed by 50018 RESOLUTION, looking smart as it arrives at Salisbury with the 1115 Waterloo-Exeter on 5 January 1991.
Cromptons made a late comeback onto Waterloo services just before the introduction of Sprinters in 1992. Here 33208+33046 works one of the last services, the 0915 Waterloo-Exeter of 18 April 1992.
The route to Minehead from Taunton diverges at Norton Fitzwarren Junction and is now operated by the West Somerset Railway.
In this view 'Hymek' no D7017 growls up the incline soon after leaving Stogumber.
The Southern route from Exeter to Plymouth was truncated at Meldon on closure in the late 1960s. At the other end the route is still in use as far as Bere Ferrers.
Until fairly recent times aggregate traffic used the section to Meldon Quarry on a semi-regular basis but now little traffic is seen.
In this view two immaculate class 37s, 37035 and 37185 pass through the now re-opened and restored Okehanpton station with the 7C38 1330 Exeter-Meldon of 12 July 1995.
Summer Saturdays in the West in later years still produced plenty of interest such as this view of Departmental owned Class 50 50019 RAMILLIES coming to the rescue of 47441 which had failed with the 0654 Rose Grove-Paignton of 9 June 1990.
The programme features many scenes in Cornwall but to illustrate the variety we thought it would be nice to show this scene on the Par Harbour branch as 08955 brings wagons into Par from the Docks.
